Horse racing can be a thrilling sport! Watching the prime athletes of the horse world stand tall with pricked ears, listening to the many sounds around them, a starting gate, the call of a race, but only one horse in the field will win or place. As thoroughbreds are bred and born mainly for racing, many often aren't cut out for it. But what can they do? Thoroughbreds can do many, many other things! Many thoroughbreds who aren't cut out for racing, or simply are finished their racing days and need an easy retirement are often family or pleasure horses. Young horses may not have the talent to be a track star, but can model in the hunter ring. They may not be fast enough on the track turn, but they are fast enough to turn in the jumper ring and jump high fences.
Some just need a place to go to rest and heal before they find their career path. But what of injured horses? Many horses who need a rest from racing find great homes! Many horses have recovered well and found homes as steady trail mounts, show horses, police horses, fancy dressage horses, polo horses and more! We accept all retired thoroughbreds of all colors and sizes into our program.
Our mission is very simple - we created our program to assist owners and trainers to enlist and turn their horses into us for either rehabilitative care or a means to find a home. We strive to decrease the number of thoroughbreds entering the slaughter pipeline, which sadly, many are often found in as they had either no where to go or someone with "goo intentions" failed them.. These horses are given an opportunity through our sanctuary that will allow each horse to obtain either rehabilitative care or a means to find a safe and well purposed home and avoid the slaughter pipeline. For those who encounter our program- there is absolutely no excuse for any horse to enter an auction and be subjected to slaughter.
What is a Kill Buyer?
A "kill buyer" is someone who purchases a horse at public auction with the intent of shipping the horse for human consumption by the means of slaughter. This is a very real thing. These practices are beyond inhumane and horrific with animals facing long trips (often 12+ hours without rest), crammed into trailers that are overcrowded and with no food or water. They are susceptible to disease and injury during the trip and even more horrific treatment during the slaughter process. Kill buyers do not discriminate on the breeds of horses they purchase, however- most horses found in kill pens or at slaughter auctions are thoroughbreds off the track. These horses simply had no option for a place to go. Much reasoning to this is the lack of financials, resources or sudden life changing events for owners.
Making a Change, Making A Difference
Our program offers every owner or trainer the option to surrender a horse to us given the stall space at the time. Our horses are adopted out with a no-slaughter contract. With each horse adopted out, a new stall space option opens for the next horse. Each horse is followed for their entire lifetime and offered the option to return to us in the event they can no longer be cared for or are no longer desired- no questions asked. Horses are always offered free training advice in their new homes at all times/ We host a no-hassle environment, which means owners and trainers can always trust and turn to us to enlist their horses, as well as visit and learn updates on their horses in their new homes. Our horses are allotted stall space, veterinary assessments, proper let down time as well as professional training.
Here at TRRAC, we use only the top veterinarians as well as professional insured and trusted shippers to ensure each horse arrives safe and sound at their new homes.
How can can you help with this change? Simply by donating to sanctuaries or placement programs who work very hard to take horses to avoid being sent to auction such as ourselves. Our program is designed to offer owners and trainers both on the track as well as privately off the track an option to send their horses to our facility for proper let down, placement, care and safe management. Many horses who end up in dire situations or a kill auction simply HAD NO PLACE TO GO. Owners were not aware of a program to take these horses in and in turn, had no other option. As a cry for help, we have created this program to help these horses in need. We cannot do this alone- consider donating to our sanctuary! Your donations allow us to bring in more horses in need. Without donations- we simply cannot offer an ample amount of space for the next horse who urgently needs a place to go.
Our program caters to the public in THREE ways:
